Many citizens of El Salvador did not support the decision of the authorities to recognize bitcoin as a legal tender. The country even held protests against the cryptocurrency law.
A poll by Sherlock Communications showed that more than half of Latin American residents know almost nothing about bitcoin.
Researchers offered respondents five coins - Bitcoin, Ether, Litecoin, EOS, and Dogecoin - and asked which one they knew. 40% chose BTC.

54% of respondents said they do not know any of the offered virtual coins.
Patrick O'Neill, representing the research team, said: "The data we collected in El Salvador clearly showed us that there is no understanding among citizens of the instrument that has been recognized by the authorities."
