Illegal miners charged with $1.5M in electricity theft

Bulgarian law enforcement authorities arrested two men who secretly plugged mining equipment into the power grid.

According to local media outlets, the hidden miners were charged with stealing electricity worth $ 1.5 million. The operation to arrest them was carried out in the small Bulgarian town of Kyustendil.

A representative of the energy supply company CEZ Electro Bulgaria said at a press conference that miners aged 31 and 38 lived in Sofia.

They launched two large token mining farms in a small town and secretly consumed electricity for about six months. However, law enforcement officers and power engineers do not exclude that the equipment could function for more than one year.

At the moment, the men were released before the court hearing. The supply company stressed that it is possible to supply electricity to an average Bulgarian settlement for a month for $1.5 million.
