Details aren't known yet as the community learned about the news by the company's job announcements. Apparently, Amazon is looking for developers to deploy a payments system involving “Digital and Emerging Payments (DEP)”. The upshot will allow converting cash to digital assets and using them for doing shopping and manage other operations.

The firm mentioned Mexico as its initial launch country.

Amazon had shown interest in the crypto industry before. In 2013 the company bought the amazonbitcoin.com domain. Then, four years later, in 2017 it acquired three more crypto-linked domains: amazoncryptocurrency.com, amazonethereum.com, and amazoncryptocurrencies.com

Since 2013, Amazon has its virtual coins called Amazon Coins. Users purchase them on different services like apps or games. Practically, these coins are a means of getting discounts and saving money.
