The upgrade is supposed to scale Ethereum and consume less energy than Proof-of-Work. Ethereum core developer and researcher Ansgar Dietrichs announced that the Prater/Goerli testnet is done and it is a new success. The Merge is expected to take place in mid-September. However, the exact timing will be discussed at a meeting of developers.
The most relevant testnet merge success metric imo is time-to-finalization. And Prater/Goerli finalized just now (still some hiccups), so I‘d call it another successful test.

Due to testnets, developers are able to try out new functions and make necessary changes before the updates are executed.
Goerli is one of the post-merge-supported testnets. According to a blog post by the Ethereum Foundation, Goerli allows stakers to test network upgrades, and developers can test complex smart contract interactions. Currently, Ether trades at above $1800. In the last 24 hours, its price increased by around 15%.
