At the Consensus: Distributed conference on Monday, May 11, Vitalik Buterin announced that the launch of Ethereum 2.0 is going to begin in July.
The update, also known as Serenity, has been repeatedly delayed. It was incipiently planned for January 2020, then moved to the second quarter, and then to the third quarter of 2020. July 30, the fifth anniversary of Ethereum, became a target date for developers.
Buterin also noted that many Ethereum development units are busy developing several scaling initiatives that can be implemented shortly after the successful launch of the network.

These include sharding, as well as new scaling solutions that are currently being tested. One of them is a second-level solution called Optimistic Rollup, which, according to Buterin, "theoretically can scale the network to more than 1000 transactions per second" even in the existing implementation of Ethereum.
Ethereum co-founder and former technical director, Gavin Wood, who is also the founder of Parity Technologies, criticized the project at the conference for its poor governance structure, which, he said, impedes the growth of Ethereum in line with community interests.
Other Ethereum developers have also confirmed that Ethereum 2.0 is going to be launched in July.
